# Conversation style & how deeply the AI probes

The **conversation style** setting controls your [interview](/blog/ai-moderated-interviews-guide)er's overall temperament — how efficient versus exploratory the interview feels, and how eagerly it follows up.

## The four styles

- **Focused** — efficient and to the point, with minimal small talk and essentially no follow-ups. Best for quick intakes and busy people.
- **Balanced (the default)** — a natural, relaxed interview that follows up on genuinely interesting answers while respecting people's time. Best for most surveys.
- **Exploratory** — dynamic and story-seeking; stays on a thread longer and digs deeper. Best for qualitative research and testimonials.
- **Max Conversational** — pure, friend-like conversation where the form disappears. The interviewer never reads questions verbatim and hides on-screen controls — it simply chats and weaves your questions in naturally. Best for brand experiences and quizzes.

You can set one style for the whole form, or override it for a single question.

## How probing works

When an answer is emotional, surprisingly high or low, vague, contradictory, or simply interesting, your interviewer asks a short, natural follow-up grounded in what the person just said — never inventing details, never repeating earlier questions, and always brief. Add a **probing intent** to any question to guide the AI ("find the exact moment that felt slow").

ChatWisp **caps probing**, so conversations never become interrogations. Each style has a sensible ceiling on follow-ups per question and across the session, and the interviewer gracefully wraps up rather than overstaying its welcome.

## Conversational interludes (optional)

By default the interviewer moves straight from question to question. But you can let it drop a short, relevant aside *between* questions — a fact, an observation, a bit of warmth — on a **sparing**, **occasional**, or **frequent** rhythm. Leave the instruction blank and the interview stays perfectly straightforward.
